Not every paralegal aspires to become a lawyer, but Carolyn (Lynn) Torres did. A married mother of two sons, Torres has worked for Los Angeles County as a paralegal in the court operations department for Child Support Services for the last 14 years. Abraham Lincoln University School of Law provided her with a path to earn her Juris Doctor degree and then, on her first attempt, successfully pass the February 2013 California General Bar Exam.
Abraham Lincoln University’s Juris Doctor program allowed Torres to attend law school while working full time, raising a family, and even volunteering as parent coordinator for her son’s high school football team. Torres says none of it would have been possible without Abraham Lincoln University’s technological advances in higher education. She credits ALU’s Founder Hyung Park and the ALU faculty’s vision and belief that a doctorate degree can be earned by non-traditional methods, providing opportunities for working students, without requiring the physical presence or cost of traditional law school programs..
The degree programs offered at ALU are truly on the cutting edge of legal education making it possible for students like Torres who aspire to complete a law degree program while simultaneously honoring important life commitments. Her completion of the Juris Doctor law degree program at ALU and her success in passing the challenging California State Bar Exam on her first attempt has turned her family, friends, and colleagues into believers in ALU’s educational program.
Torres took advantage of the ALU School of Law’s partnership with BARBRI, the nationally respected bar review company, and completed the BarBri bar review course prior to taking the California General Bar Exam. Torres says that she would definitely recommend BARBRI to any student preparing to take the California General Bar Examination, and she felt very prepared going into the exam.
Most importantly, Torres indicated that she was able to complete the J.D. program without missing family vacations, her son’s football games, or important family events, which is a testament to the flexibility and possibilities offered at ALU. She is proud and honored to be a graduate of ALU!
