Popular Post-Military Careers: Law Enforcement | ALU

Being prepared for a career after leaving the military is important for active duty service members. It is important to plan ahead before leaving the military in order to have a job or career path waiting. Many popular post-military careers take advantage not only of the educational opportunities offered by the post-9/11 GI Bill® and other Tuition Assistance benefits, but also the vocational tasks performed by a service member during his or her service.

A career in law enforcement is a popular option for many service members post-military. Schools like Abraham Lincoln University, which offers diploma, associate and bachelor’s programs in Criminal Justice, can help active-duty service members prepare to enter the world of law enforcement.

Benefits of Military Service

Benefits for post-military careers for service members fall into two categories: the educational opportunities available to active-duty soldiers, veterans, and military family members; and the career training service members receive as a part of their service. Members of the Armed Forces should take advantage of each when preparing for career opportunities after their time in the service has ended.

Law enforcement organizations look to experience as much as education when hiring new candidates. Those with a military background will have a leg up on the competition, having served in a chain-of-command situation and already being familiar with many aspects of the law enforcement realm which are similar to the military world. For example, those who served in the MPs (Military Police) are sought-after candidates for police forces, sheriffs departments, and other law enforcement organizations across the country.

Soldiers may also educate themselves via online distance learning programs like those of Abraham Lincoln University while deployed. Military Tuition Assistance and other benefits help soldiers pay for their education; studying in their free time with the costs covered, in courses leading toward licensing, certification or degrees will be of massive assistance in landing a law enforcement job when service is over.

Abraham Lincoln University, founded in 1996, is an online distance learning school accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). To learn more about the Criminal Justice programs offered by ALU, as well as the other areas of study the school offers, visit www.alu.edu.
